SFU is one of Canada's most prestigious universities, founded in 1965. It has three campuses: Burnaby, Vancouver, and Surrey. It is ranked 319th in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2025 and is the number one comprehensive university in Canada according to Maclean's.

Step 1: Choose your application path

International high school students have two options: direct admission to SFU (recommended for high-achieving students) or admission through Fraser International College (FIC), an on-campus partner program. FIC prepares students for study in the Canadian education system and provides the opportunity to transfer to SFU after graduation.

Step 2: Check academic requirements

The minimum GPA for admission is 2.5 out of 4.0 (79%). The average GPA of admitted students is 3.5 (89%). Competition is high, so it's best to aim for the upper limit.

For graduate programs, the minimum GPA is 3.33 out of 4.33 (83%), and competitive programs consider candidates with a GPA of 3.5 (85%) and above.

Step 3: Confirm your English level

For undergraduate programs: IELTS — from 6.5, TOEFL — from 80. For graduate programs: IELTS — minimum 7.0, TOEFL iBT — from 93.

PTE and Duolingo English Test are also accepted.

Step 4. Prepare documents

International students are required to submit: academic transcripts, proof of GPA, language test results (IELTS/TOEFL/PTE/Duolingo), a personal statement (SOP), letters of recommendation (LOR), and a resume (CV).

Some programs also require the GMAT or GRE.

Step 5: Submit your application and pay the fee

Applications are submitted through the official SFU portal. The application fee for international students is CAD 160 and must be paid within 7 days of submitting your application, otherwise it will be cancelled.

Step 6: Meet the filing deadlines

SFU offers three intakes: Fall (September), Spring (January), and Summer. It is recommended to submit applications no later than March 31st to allow sufficient time for visa and housing arrangements.
For undergraduate programs in Spring, the deadline is September 15th.

Important for Russian-speaking students

SFU is a full-fledged research university, not a college. Requirements are significantly higher than at Seneca or Humber. If academic achievements aren't high enough, Fraser International College (FIC) offers a viable and reliable pathway to an SFU degree.
