Harvard University

Harvard University it has the title of the oldest educational institution in America, founded in 1636. At the beginning of its education, this university was called «New College», and its purpose was mainly to train the clergy. In 1639, the school's name became Harvard University, named after the Rev. John Harvard. After death Harvard he bequeathed half of his property and his entire library to the school. This significant will led the school to honor him with his name.

During the colonial era Harvard used a curriculum that focused on repetition-based learning. This style of learning was consistent with the typical learning styles of this period. In 1782 Harvard added medical research to school curricula. Some buildings still standing on the university grounds originated in the 18th century. Massachusetts Hall was built in 1720, and Wadsworth House was built in 1726. The original 17th-century buildings do not survive; however, the school marks their location with copper markers.

Harvard University added additional programs during the 19th century, namely law in 1816 and theology in 1817. Harvard celebrated his bicentennial birthday in the 19th century. On the school's 200th anniversary, then-President Josiah Quincy publicly displayed the school's new shield for the first time, with the motto «Veritas». The school formally adopted this shield in 1843. Quincy was the 15th president of Harvard, a post he held between 1829 and 1845. Teaching methods at school developed during this era. Harvard started offering more programs and more variety, giving students more freedom in choosing programs. Lectures have also replaced the style of reading teaching.

In 1910 Harvard University officially adopted crimson as the school color. This choice of color arose in the mid-1800s, when two students on the rowing team handed out scarlet scarves to all crew members so that the crowd could more easily distinguish them.

Harvard presidents during the 20th century sought to focus on applied learning. President A. Lawrence Lowell worked tirelessly on the new «concentration and distribution system». This system was designed to help students choose their learning streams more effectively so that they can learn and progress more effectively in their learning courses. Lowell also identified fellowship priorities. In the 20th century Harvard University also offered students more opportunities for financial assistance, thus increasing the number of students.

Currently Harvard University trains 17,000 students on a regular basis and another 30,000 students in non-degree courses.
