Louisiana State University, the state's main university, was founded in 1853 and has since achieved 16th place in popularity in the United States, 129th place among national and 63rd place among US public universities. The university is located in the capital of Louisiana and currently has more than 30,000 students. The most notable alumni are basketball player Shaquille O'Neal and journalist and broadcaster Brown Campbell.
