Bridging program

The Bridging programme is designed for all students entering college and gives them the opportunity to engage with interesting and challenging topics that go beyond the academic syllabus. The programme gives students an understanding of their chosen field of study, including a realistic understanding of the industry, current events and issues surrounding it. It also prepares them for medical school interviews and the challenging subject interviews at Oxford and Cambridge.

Students can choose from the following subjects: Medicine, Science, Economics, Engineering, Law, Veterinary Science, Computer Science, Architecture and Linguistics. The number of programmes on offer is constantly increasing.

The Aptitude Testing Preparation

The Aptitude Testing Preparation courseis designed to prepare students for entrance examinations that are mandatory for certain subjects (medicine, law, etc.) or certain universities (e.g. Oxbridge). The skills that students develop in preparing for these tests go beyond the syllabus, leading to improved critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are needed both in the classroom and in the workplace.Students will be required to take regular mock exams to become accustomed to the question format and requirements.

Most students will take classes in two of the following (this is not a complete list):

  • TSA (Thinking Skills Assessment)
  • LNAT (Law National Admission Test)
  • NSAA (Natural Science Assessment)
  • ENGAA (Engineering Science Assessment of Achievement)
  • ECAA (Economics Assessment)
  • MAT (Mathematics Assessment)
  • STEP (Students' Examination Test in Mathematics)
  • BMAT (Biomedical Assessment of Knowledge)
  • UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test)
  • CLT (Cambridge Law Test)

Aptitude Testing Preparation programmes are delivered by Oxbridge tutors who are graduates of Oxford and other leading universities.

The Extended Project Qualification

After the first term, students are given the opportunity to take part in the Extended Project Qualification. This is a unique opportunity to direct their own learning and research a specific topic of interest, outside the A-level syllabus, and write a final 5,000 word paper. Students are supported by EPQ tutors during research and writing, and are given specialist skills as they work on the project.

The EPQ is highly recommended for students applying to leading universities, as it demonstrates motivation to continue their studies in their chosen subject and is a strong argument in the personal statement and interview.

Academic Competitions

Students are also required to take part in academic competitions. These competitions can be of great help in securing a place at their desired university, as well as improving essay writing and teamwork skills. Here are some of the competitions:

They also receive coaching on writing a personal statement and discuss summer activities, including further study and work experience.

Summer UCAS Programme (August)

Communities

Recently introduced at OIC, the Society system aims to develop teamwork skills and instill a sense of community among students. Upon joining the college, students are assigned to one of four societies - Redox, Azura, Blackwells and Spires - each with its own unique motto.

While points for the society can be earned for excellent work, the main aim of the system is to engage students in all sorts of intercollegiate competitions. The college hosts a range of events and competitions throughout the year, giving everyone the opportunity to get involved, whether it is the entire society or a single member who earns points for the whole society.

Students are encouraged to form their own clubs within the college if they have a hobby/interest that they would like to share with the rest of the school.
