Stonar School

Stonar School is a co-educational school in Wiltshire that has been providing high-quality education since 1895. It is a member of the prestigious NACE educational network of prestigious European secondary schools. The school has a reputation for being one of the best equestrian schools in the UK. In 2018, 90.1% of students completed GCSE with good grades, including 29.2% with A and A* grades.

  • The exams are very practical and, although there is a lot of theory to be covered, all of these qualifications are about being able to care for a horse effectively and competently, following the correct techniques and with a firm awareness of the safety of yourself, the horse and others.
  • The school also offers A-level students a Level 3 qualification in Horse Management (National Diploma in Horse Management).

A world-class, British Horse Society (BHS) approved equestrian centre is located right in the heart of the school grounds; equestrianism has been a key feature of Stonar for decades.

Stonar School Educational Programs

A-level curriculum

The school offers a wide range of subjects within the A-level (Sixth form) preparatory programme. Students have access to over 20 subjects, the list of which is adjusted annually in accordance with demand.

Among the available subjects are:

  • art, acting and theatre, music;
  • natural sciences, geography, history;
  • business;
  • design and technology;
  • computer science, exact sciences;
  • English literature, French, Spanish;
  • fashionable design;
  • horse management;
  • physical education, sports and exercise;
  • philosophy, religion and ethics;
  • psychology.

International students are given the opportunity to complete the programme in their native language, prepare for IELTS or other English language tests. EPQ, DofE and Leith's Cookery are also offered as equivalents to the A-level programme.

The curriculum is GCSE (10-11 grades)

Students must take compulsory subjects - English and English Literature (IGCSE English Language and English Literature) or English as a Second Language (IGCSE English as a Second Language), Mathematics (IGCSE Mathematics), Combined Science (Double Award).

Physical Education is a compulsory subject but is not included in the exams. Additionally, students can choose 4 subjects from 4 blocks:
  • A (theatre, physical education GCSE)
  • B (fine arts, computer science, history, geography, photography)
  • C (French, Spanish, Design and Technology, Music, History)
  • D (religion, business, food and nutrition, geography).

Extracurricular activities at Stonar School

Studying at Stonar is not only interesting classes, but also exciting leisure. Students always have something to do after classes and a short break with tea and a bun. Additional classes start at 16:15 and last one hour.

Students have access to more than 20 clubs and interest groups, where they can not only acquire useful skills or knowledge, but also make acquaintances with peers, find mentors and gain confidence in their abilities.

Students can choose:

  • sports sections (football, basketball, badminton, weightlifting, hockey, rugby, swimming);
  • art (choir, acting, rock bands, instrumental ensemble);
  • creative clubs (photography, Catch Up Art, Paper Cutting Craft);
  • academic clubs (French conversation club, historical film club, Latin, cooking);
  • other areas, including charity, eco-club, Lego construction, pony club and others.

Pupils are divided into four competitive houses - Beaushin, Cottles, Hale and Pawlett. Throughout the year they take part in competitions in music, drama, public speaking, gingerbread house making and more. Each victory contributes to the results of the house, which are summed up at the end of the academic year.

The cost of the programme is £37,332 per year

The cost of tuition includes:

  • Full board (double, triple or quadruple rooms)
  • Meals (breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner)
  • core curriculum excursions
  • compulsory textbooks and stationery
  • personal accident insurance
  • participation in most clubs
  • up to 4 lessons of English as an Additional Language (EAL) per week
  • the cost of visa processing between the school and the UK Border Agency and membership of the International Society.

The fees do NOT include:

  • Registration fee - £100 pounds

Accommodation at Stonar School

There are three houses available for accommodation on the school grounds. Wi-Fi is available throughout the school grounds, as well as dedicated computer areas for independent study and group work.
