The National Mathematics and Science College

The National Mathematics and Science College is the UK’s leading specialist STEM college. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is more important than ever. For those students who want to excel in these areas, the college provides a specialist education designed to enable them to succeed at A-level and beyond.

The college’s students regularly progress to some of the world’s best universities – ones that can change the trajectory of your life. In 2019/20, 25% of students gained Oxbridge places, with many more going to Imperial, UCL, Manchester and Bristol, across a range of subjects including science, maths, engineering and biomedical science. Students at the National Mathematics and Science College achieve incredible results. They have a 100% A*/A record in Mathematics every year since they opened.

Thanks to the professional teaching they receive, students achieve outstanding success in national and international competitions. Students have represented the UK at international Olympiads two years running, and have achieved significant success in Euclid, the UKMT Senior Mathematics Challenge, as well as the Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science and Linguistics Olympiads. Students at the College regularly feature in the top 10% of UK participants in these competitions.

Learning at the College never stops and extends well beyond the classroom.
With a wide range of academic clubs and student societies, as well as a large number of workshops, trips and visits. Teaching is a practical discipline, so both in and out of the classroom there is a strong focus on providing students with practical experience wherever possible. It is through this practical work that students really come alive. They are transformed from students into scholars.

The teaching philosophy, the proven system of pastoral care, the phenomenal facilities - all this helps students to leave their comfort zone. Then extraordinary things can happen: the rate of progress increases dramatically. There are no barriers to how far or quickly students can progress.

Over the past year:

  • 100% entered Russell Group universities
  • 56% entered G5 universities
  • 20% studied at Oxford or Cambridge

Over the last 3 years:

  • 97% of students went on to Russell Group universities.
  • 59% of students entered G5 universities.
  • 15% of students went to Oxford or Cambridge.
  • 100% of students applying to the Faculty of Medicine received places

Training programs

PRE-A LEVEL PROGRAM

Duration of the program – 1 year
Age of students – from 15 years

During the year, all students study:

  • Mathematics
  • Computer science
  • English
  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Physics

The aim of the programme is to provide students with a solid foundation to enable them to succeed on the two-year A Level programme. Over the course of the year, they will work intensively on their English language skills and develop the practical science skills needed to succeed at A Level. Students take tests in English (PET, FCE, IELTS) and Mathematics (GCSE Additional Maths).

All Pre-A Level pupils take part in a range of academic competitions, including Olympiads, and the College’s Enhancement Programme, which includes a choir, clubs and societies, academic and cultural visits to British heritage sites (eg Bletchley Park) and STEM activity days (eg Oxford Space Design). Pre-A Level pupils also develop confidence, public speaking skills and leadership qualities through the dedicated Belgrade Theatre Programme.

A-LEVEL PROGRAMME

Duration of the programme – 2 years
Age range – 15 to 18 years

All students study Mathematics and usually up to 3 other subjects chosen from:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Computer science
  • Economy
  • Higher Mathematics
  • Physicists

For international students, English language study is a compulsory (and included) component of the course. All students are entered into academic competitions and participate in the college’s enrichment programme, which includes clubs and societies; academic visits to local universities (such as STEM in Action Days at nearby Warwick University); and Oxbridge events.

Students can also join the college choir. At A-level, students also develop confidence, public speaking skills and leadership skills through the Parliamentary Leadership Programme.

Medical Pathway

Alongside the A-level programme, the college has a dedicated Medical Pathway, which builds on the A-level programme and helps ensure that aspiring medical professionals are fully prepared. Medicine is one of the most challenging and sought-after courses in the UK. The NatMatSci Medical Pathway is a tailor-made programme designed to provide high levels of excellence in the key areas needed to succeed in medicine. In addition to academic excellence, international students are also required to demonstrate excellent English language skills and an understanding of the UK National Health Service compared to other systems around the world.

Leadership Programme

To ensure that students can make a real difference in the world and put their scientific and mathematical knowledge into practice, the College also prepares them for leadership. This is done through two main programmes: the Parliamentary Programme, which develops debating and public speaking skills and introduces them to the UK’s political systems and structures, and the Model UN programme.

The College also runs a bespoke theatre programme, developed in partnership with the Belgrade Theatre UK. Together, these programmes ensure that students are not only able to excel in mathematics and science, but are also able to communicate this understanding effectively to others.

The accommodation facilities are among the best. Modern single rooms with en-suite bathrooms and shared kitchens, as well as the security and support provided by the team of staff. In addition, each student has membership to a high-quality gym and swimming pool just a couple of minutes’ walk from the college.
