A biomedical science major is a great start that allows a graduate to find a successful job after graduation in healthcare, academia, or research, or to continue their education in medical school. Therefore, many students interested in learning about medical technology and new therapies begin their journey with an undergraduate degree in this specialty.
Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) predicts impressive growth in the job market for biomedical science graduates.
By 2028, the number of health-related jobs will increase by 52.2%, while positions in the natural and applied sciences will increase by 38.9%. That means 1.4 million new opportunities will open up.
ESDC has narrowed it down to 28 specific job categories, with 760,000 jobs on the horizon by 2028. Half of these will be brand new positions.
Biomedical Science Program at the University of Niagara Falls
The University of Niagara Falls offers an innovative Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences, which is also a Pre-Med Pathway program developed in collaboration with two internationally recognized medical schools: the Medical University of America (MUA) or Saba University School of Medicine (SABA).
Upon successful completion of a bachelor's degree with a 3.0 or higher grade point average, students receive 1 full year of transfer credits toward a medical degree at either partner institution. Both schools, located in the Caribbean, provide an international alternative to medical schools in the United States and Canada.
The program's core courses are:
Human Anatomy and Physiology. Study of the structure of human body functions. Classes in a virtual laboratory will help provide a basic understanding of the physiological processes that occur in the structure of the body.
Community Health. Students gain an understanding of community health rather than individual health, epidemiology, etc.
Health Psychology. A look at how biological, psychological, and social factors interact and influence the efforts people make to promote health and prevent disease.
Students also take a number of additional courses: human biology, organic chemistry, research, health research methods, genetics, nutrition, microbiology, anatomy, and abnormal psychology.
Biomedical Science Program at Toronto Metropolitan University
Students who want to major in biomedical science and continue on to medical school have an easy and convenient pathway - the UTP Phase II: Science program. This course is equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto. After successfully completing UTP Stage II, students continue on to the 2nd year of study at Toronto Metropolitan University. Students must obtain a CGPA 2.0 to enter the Faculty of Science at TMU.
In the Biomedical Sciences program, students study the molecular and cellular mechanisms of health, disease and infection. The course offers expertise in genetics, genomics and microbiology, providing opportunities for research and collaboration. Graduates may pursue careers in clinical laboratories, biotechnology, research institutes, healthcare management or consulting.
TMU's Faculty of Science is a center of excellence in applied research and education located in the heart of downtown Toronto. Programs are a rigorous blend of scientific theory and practical practice, each leading to an Honours University Bachelor of Science degree.
Biomedicine Program at Simon Fraser University
A similar opportunity exists at Simon Fraser University. International students can enroll in the UTP Phase II: Science Pathway program. Successful completion of the course allows graduates to progress to the Faculty of Health Sciences.
A minimum admission CGPA of 2.75 based on a minimum of 10 courses (at least 30 courses with a grade of C- or higher in all courses) will guarantee admission to the Faculty of Science (FCI).
Upon successful completion of the UTP Phase II: Science Pathway program, graduates may choose two pathways in the health care field:
