College studies provide excellent student prospects. Besides classes, every student passes several on-the-job trainings in the course of studies in the specialized institutions. Higher educational institutions cooperate with large corporations in various industries and therefore they can arrange on-the-job training for their students and favor further employment.

Public colleges of Canada can be divided into two big groups: public and technical ones.
When choosing a higher educational institution for yourself, it is important to know the college major and where one can get the best training. For example, Seneca college provides the strongest training in business programs and IT as well as animation. Humber College prepares the most professional experts in polytechnic major. George Brown College is famous for its design programs, etc.

Studies at college have many advantages:

  1. Diplomas of Canadian colleges are recognized all over the world.
  2. Studies are held in small groups, which makes it possible for students to do their best, while teachers can pay attention to everyone.
  3. Programs are aimed at practical training, the part of theoretical knowledge is minimized, which allows to provide a student with integral training for a future job.
  4. Studies do not take much time (depending on the program it may take from 1 to 4 years).
  5. Colleges train specialists, focusing on the demands of the labor market which guarantees further employment for graduates.
  6. Graduates receive a work permit in Canada for a period they spent for the studies. Later on, the chance to stay for permanent residence increases several times.
  7. After 2 years of studies at college the student may transfer to the university.
  8. Studies cost is much cheaper than at the university.

Enrollment requirements

To be enrolled to a college in Canada, the applicant shall submit:

  • school certificate or diploma of higher education;
  • certificate of the English (or French) language proficiency.

Moreover, some colleges conduct entrance exams or demand an essay, creative works or a motivation letter.

The minimum age of the applicant is 16 years old.

Programs

College programs in Canada are numerous and rather different. There are more than five hundred different programs for students' training in all possible specialties (from nurse to engineer). They are distinguished by a specific major ensuring training of specialists on a high level. Colleges provide training towards both blue-collar jobs and an academic degree favoring in occupying senior management positions.

Upon completion of different programs at public colleges a student receives:

  • certificate (studies take 1 year. The document grants the right to work under the most common specialties. The program includes basic training of workers);
  • diploma (studies will take 2-3 years. Professional training is carried out at a higher level. This document gives an opportunity to get a good well-paid job);
  • Bachelor's degree (studies last 4 years. An academic degree providing an opportunity to take senior management positions under most professions (except for medicine, law, etc.))

Colleges also have advanced training programs for students with diploma of higher education. The Post-Graduate Program allows a student to get a new profession within 1-2 years.

College students get a chance to join Co-op Programs. They are developed in such a way that a student can study and work at the same time. This is an excellent opportunity for students, who need to earn money or want to get hands-on experience as quick as possible.

Foreigners can take preparatory courses. They are organized at the college and help to adapt to the educational system, improve knowledge of a foreign language and other specialized subjects. Many public colleges in Canada allow students, who finished these courses, to be enrolled without entrance exams.

Accommodation terms and conditions

International students can live on college campuses or in host families.

Campuses are usually located on the territory of the higher educational institution. They have everything necessary for safe and comfortable life and studies. This ensures quick and complete adaptation to new conditions, finding friends and having fun. Besides studies, colleges offer many social activities and entertainment programs for their students.

Accommodation in a host family is usually recommended for younger students. They are provided with a separate comfortable room and meals, as well as opportunity to live with a Canadian family, learn more about the traditions of the people and the peculiarities of life in the country.
