Aviation Operation Program at Seneca College

Seneca College offers a two-year diploma program in aviation that includes Canadian regulations and provides the technical and practical skills needed to work in a variety of airline positions.

Graduates will have the knowledge necessary to take the Transport Canada dispatcher's license exams.

During the course of study, students learn about:

  • aviation standards;
  • aviation history and regulations;
  • aviation management;
  • Controlled area operations;
  • flight planning and dispatch;
  • meteorology;
  • emergency planning.

The Aviation Operations program includes study of the following courses:

  • aviation and computer applications;
  • aeronautics;

  • technical communications;
  • health and safety, etc.

Upon successful completion, students can participate in the Co-op program - obtain a paid full-time position between two academic semesters.

The tuition fee for international students is $16618/year.

Aviation Management Program at Georgian College

Georgian College offers a comprehensive three-year Aviation Management diploma program. It provides a full range of knowledge, skills, and real-world experience for the aviation industry.

The program includes the study of two areas:

  1. Aviation. These concentrate on airplanes, the operation of aviation companies and airports, aviation safety, and piloting and navigation. Graduates have a solid understanding of how the industry works in Canada and other countries around the world.
  2. Management. These courses are designed to provide an understanding of business and management practices in the areas of:
  • marketing,
  • human resources,
  • communications,
  • project management.

Students may take an examination to become licensed for a specific job in the aviation radio communications field.

The program includes study of the following courses:

  • Aviation;
  • Government and Aviation;
  • Flight Lab;
  • Airport Management;
  • Computer Applications - Spreadsheets;
  • Mathematics of Finance;
  • Marketing Fundamentals;
  • Aircraft Characteristics;
  • Air transportation, customs and logistics;
  • Introduction to Aerodynamics, etc.

This is a Co-op program - students with high scores and meeting the requirements can complete a paid internship with a real company in a real full-time position.

During the course of the program, students will learn the following skills:

  • conduct radio communications in accordance with Industry Canada guidelines and become certified as a Limited Radiotelephone Operator;
  • learn Canadian and international aviation regulatory bodies and utilize the regulations of the Canadian aviation industry;
  • utilize management principles to effectively and efficiently operate and manage airport and airline operations;
  • apply principles of accounting, finance and human resource management to manage airport and airline operations;
  • apply knowledge of modern aviation technology, aerodynamics, and meteorology to ensure safe aircraft operations;
  • apply knowledge of systems and procedures for the movement of people and cargo by domestic and international air carriers and airports;
  • utilize risk management processes to define and implement safety policies and procedures for airport, cargo and aviation operations;
  • develop and implement safety and emergency management systems (SMS) and safety management systems (SeMS) to meet regulatory requirements and for the safe operation of airports and airlines;
  • describe the use and control of modern aircraft, Canadian airspace, navigation systems and navigation aids;
  • apply modern computer technology and utilize technical equipment specific to the aviation industry;
  • apply basic problem solving, decision making, oral and written communication and personal relationship skills to act as a basic or operational manager;
  • analyze airport layouts from both design and operational perspectives.

Career perspectives

Graduates can work in a wide variety of aviation fields:

  • airline management;
  • business aircraft operations;
  • airport management;
  • safety management operations;
  • airport planning;
  • cargo operations;
  • flight dispatch and state aviation agencies.

Holders of this degree may continue their training in the Department of National Defense or become air traffic controllers, commercial/airline pilots, and flight service specialists.

Tuition for international students is $8186/semester.
