Biomedical Sciences Program

Biomedical sciences is a promising specialty for those who see their future in medicine or natural science research.

Biomedical science is a growing interdisciplinary field that supports the creation, revision, and implementation of innovative methods to advance medicine and human health.

Biomedical scientists combine knowledge from multiple fields of study such as biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology, and paraclinical sciences. They use their findings to prevent, treat, and diagnose a variety of disorders and diseases, as well as to analyze existing and potential laboratory and computational analysis tools.

In 2020, the Organization for Biological Innovation Ontario (OBIO) indicated that the health sciences industry has the opportunity to become a leader in the economy and potentially create value by addressing all aspects of human health. In addition, the Canadian biomedical industry is growing steadily in all related sectors.

As the health and medical field becomes more advanced and complex, there is an increasing demand for highly skilled professionals with biomedical backgrounds. Many scientific firms in Ontario are successfully developing medical innovations to treat diseases and improve quality of life. A well-versed, skilled and highly educated workforce is required to support the expansion of this industry in Canada. From production lines, technologists and technicians to scientists and researchers, there is a demand for educated, work-ready and skilled employees in the biomedical sciences.

What can graduates with a biomedical science degree do for a job?

A bachelor's degree in this specialty and further study will allow the graduate to work in the profession:

Biomedical Sciences Program at Humber College

The College offers a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences program that provides students with advanced education, knowledge, skills, and practical experience through classroom and laboratory instruction and summer internships.

This program prepares graduates for careers in developing new therapies and approaches to improve human health and well-being. Graduates may also choose to pursue graduate and professional education in master's and doctoral programs, as well as in medical school, dentistry, pharmacy, and many other fields.

Humber College provides a biotechnology laboratory for instruction that is equipped with the latest technology and equipment and is designed to maximize teaching and learning. The Life Sciences Laboratory is equipped with a variety of tools and resources such as anatomical models, embedded and external human specimens, and other aids to enhance student understanding of anatomical relationships and physiological principles.

Graduates of this program are equipped to work in the biomedical sciences in the private or public sector or are well prepared for advanced study in health-related fields including medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, pharmacy, graduate school, and more. The knowledge and skills learned in this program can be implemented in a multitude of settings, and the depth and breadth of these settings is ever-increasing.

Biomedical Sciences Program at Trent University

Trent University also offers an advanced undergraduate Biomedical Sciences program.

Trent University students study a range of subjects in the classroom and laboratory, including cell biology, anatomy, biochemistry and biomedical ethics, among others. Emphasis is placed on putting what they learn into practice through experiential learning in a professional healthcare environment.

Students learn from leading practitioners through a unique medical internship program where they get the opportunity to immerse themselves in the healthcare environment by shadowing physicians and observing medicine in action - a rare experience at the undergraduate level.

The university also offers the opportunity to complete an MSc in Environmental and Life Sciences just 12-16 months after completing a BSc (Hons) degree.

Biomedical Science Program at Toronto Metropolitan University

Toronto Metropolitan University offers an undergraduate program in Biomedical Science. In this specialized program, students gain an understanding of biological processes and how they relate to health, infections and the development of disease states.

Biomedical science is a rapidly growing field with the ultimate goal of developing effective treatments and rehabilitation methods. Students study biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, physiology, and other topics important to medical research as well as the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

All biomedical science students receive the same course load during their first two years. In the first year, they learn the fundamentals of science and math. In the second year, they take advanced courses in cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry and biomedical sciences - the cornerstone areas of the biomedical sciences and the foundation that will be needed for specialized upper-division courses. Students may also choose electives in courses beyond the natural sciences.

In the senior year, students begin to explore more in-depth specialized topics in the biomedical sciences, including core courses in advanced biochemistry, molecular biology, and immunology. A choice of electives will allow for either greater depth of knowledge in one area or the development of interdisciplinary knowledge in several areas.

Especially for biomedical science students, innovative courses in experimental planning and critical thinking are offered to teach how to think about why science is done a certain way and how to design science for the future.
Biomedical Sciences is a promising major for those who see their future in medicine or science research. It will be an excellent springboard to a master's degree or a successful career immediately after graduation
