Civil Engineering: Study in Canada

Training Civil Engineers in Canada: A Path to a Successful Career in the Construction Industry. Opportunities and prospects for international students.

Civil engineers have always been and remain in demand. These are specialists who design and supervise the construction of roads, civil buildings, dams, highways, tunnels, bridges, water supply and drainage systems.

In the process of work, they must simultaneously calculate a large number of aspects: from the cost of the project and the life of the facility to possible hazards (earthquakes, tornadoes), government regulations and standards, etc.

Such specialists can occupy management positions or engage in administrative work (from a site foreman to a city engineer).

The responsibilities of a civil engineer include:

  • study of technical specifications;
  • pre-planning;
  • development of an engineering project;
  • carrying out calculations;
  • preparation of technical documentation;
  • coordination and presentation of work;
  • supervising the construction process, etc.

Therefore, specialists must have higher education and high qualifications, as well as practical experience.

Why study civil engineering?

The profession of a civil engineer consistently occupies a leading position in the list of the most popular and promising ones, because construction is one of the fastest growing and most invested industries in the world.

Canada's construction industry plays an important role in the construction and maintenance of residential and commercial buildings, as well as infrastructure projects such as highways, bridges, tunnels, water supplies, and the like.

As much of Canada's infrastructure falls into disrepair, the federal government has announced plans to increase infrastructure spending in the coming years, opening up big opportunities for civil engineers.

College graduates have no problem finding high-paying and promising jobs in their specialty.

Since a diploma from Canadian universities is valued all over the world, graduates will be able to find work in other countries if they wish. The field of civil engineering remains consistently in demand, so a qualified specialist will not be left without work.

Civil Engineering Programs at Humber College

Humber College offers a Civil Engineering Technology diploma program. This advanced program will provide the skills needed for careers in the growing civil infrastructure industry, including buildings, highways, water, wastewater, landscaping and more.

The program is developed in collaboration with industry and covers all aspects from design to completion of construction. It combines academic learning with hands-on laboratory work.

Students learn to design:

  • steel, reinforced concrete and wooden structures;
  • municipal services (water supply and sanitation);
  • transport infrastructure facilities (roads, highways, bridges), etc.

Students also gain skills needed to support design and construction, including surveying, geomatics, geographic information systems, drafting, soil and materials testing, project administration and management, and environmental aspects.

Students work with advanced software that is used for drawing preparation, surveying, project management, structural analysis, design, etc.

Internship

Students undergo a mandatory internship after the 4th semester. It involves practical work for a minimum of 400 hours. Before starting the internship, students take additional classes.

Career Opportunities

Graduates can work in both the public and private sectors with municipalities, engineering consulting firms, contractors, surveyors, architects, etc.

They can do the job:

  • project managers;
  • designers;
  • inspectors;
  • project contractor, etc.

Tuition fee – $7800/semester.

Diploma program "Civil Engineering Technologies"

One popular program for future civil engineers is the Civil Engineering Technology program at George Brown College.

It is designed for 3 years of study (6 semesters) and upon completion, students receive an Advanced Diploma.

The training focuses on the planning, design and construction of roads, tunnels, bridges, buildings, municipal facilities and heavy infrastructure. Students learn to ensure that projects are functional, cost-effective, and comply with standards and regulations. There is an opportunity to enroll in the Co-op program.

The program includes:

  • Design of reinforced concrete structures, stormwater, water supply and sanitary systems, roads and metal frame structures.
  • Interpret construction drawings and specifications for different types of projects through hands-on training.
  • Estimating, bidding, planning and project management using the latest software.
  • Ensuring health and safety on the construction site.
  • Risk and cost analysis of a construction project.
  • Study of the types of contracts that are used in the construction industry, as well as the legal aspects of construction.
  • Learn business management techniques to prequalify projects based on expected profit, start and manage a construction company, and understand the financial reporting needed to run a construction business.

Internship and Co-op

Students undertake summer internships in the civil and construction sectors. After the 5th semester, students have the opportunity to work under the Co-op program for a period of 8 - 12 months. Students who qualify will enroll in the winter semester after completing Term 5 and will complete Term 6 the following year after returning from Co-op.

Career Opportunities

Graduates develop skills in the design, construction and maintenance of civil infrastructure projects (bridges, tunnels, roads, railways, stormwater, water and other systems).

Graduates are ready for employment in various organizations: government, contractors, developers, construction quality control services, engineering and consulting firms, geodetic companies, concrete plants, etc.

Graduates can hold positions:

  • structural Design Assistant;
  • assistant site manager;
  • appraiser;
  • project surveyor;
  • municipal inspector;
  • construction sales specialist;
  • construction safety specialist;
  • project planner, etc.
