Why Study Game Programming in Canada?

The Canadian video game industry is recognized as a global hub for game development and has played a significant role in transforming what was once a niche industry into a blockbuster-driven, innovation-driving powerhouse. In 2015, the industry invested over $3 billion in the Canadian economy and provided 20,400 full-time equivalent jobs (FTEs) nationwide, marking a 31 percent growth in jobs and a 24 percent increase in FTEs since 2013.

According to the 2021 Economic Impact Report by the Entertainment Software Association of Canada, there are over 900 active studios in the country.

The average annual salary for full-time employees in 2021 was approximately $78,600.

Game Programming Program at George Brown College

George Brown College offers a three-year diploma program in 'Game Programming.' Students acquire the technical skills necessary for the industry, study the 'language of games' (C and C++), artificial intelligence, 3D graphics, and more. Throughout their studies, students are guided by the college's School of Design faculty.

A mandatory requirement for enrollment is having a PC with the following specifications:

  • Minimum 8GB RAM (16GB recommended)
  • 256GB SSD hard drive (500+ GB optimal)
  • Approximately 100GB of hard drive space for necessary software
  • Quad-core i7 2.5GHz processor or better
  • Graphics card (4GB RAM recommended, supporting OpenGL 3.2+ and DirectX 11/12)
  • Webcam

Game Programming Program at Humber College

This institution also offers an advanced diploma program in this field, spanning six semesters.

Humber's Game Programming program focuses on programming (from indie to AAA). It is designed for students passionate about game development, programming, and mathematics. Students delve into C++ programming, graphics (SDL, OpenGL, and Vulkan), mathematics, physics, artificial intelligence, Unreal/Unity game engines, and networking technologies. Through individual and team projects, practical experience in using programming tools to create games is gained. Particular attention is paid to essential concepts such as game engine architecture, memory management, and agile development methodologies.

The final semester at Humber College includes an internship, providing an excellent opportunity to gain practical industry experience.

Graduates can work as:

The tuition cost for the 2023/24 academic year is $16,803 per year.

Game Programming Program at Niagara College Canada

Niagara College Canada offers an advanced bachelor's program in this field, spanning 4 years of study.

This is a unique dual-credit program between Niagara College and Brock University that allows students to obtain a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Game Programming at Brock University and an advanced diploma in game development in just four years.

The program includes hundreds of hours of practical and hands-on learning in state-of-the-art game development labs.

Practical experience in individual and collaborative game development includes team projects in which students conceptualize, design, develop, and showcase original games.

For their studies, students must have a PC with the following specifications:

  • Processor. A minimum 64-bit multicore Intel or AMD processor with SSE4.2 instruction set (in practice, any 64-bit processor released since 2008). The more recent, the better.
  • Graphics Card. Avoid ATI video cards as we've experienced issues with systems using them. Minimum: all NVidia GeForce cards; Quadro and Titan, newer AMD Radeon cards. Recommended: for NVidia GeForce 10 series and above, or Quadros. Minimum 4 GB of memory.
  • Memory. Minimum required is 16 GB, but performance will likely be reduced. Recommended is 32 GB. Ensure the motherboard can support additional memory if needed in the future.
  • Hard Drive with a capacity of at least 512 GB. 1 TB is recommended, as game projects can be quite large.
